How to Create a Flower Arrangement at Home

Create Your Very Own Flower Arrangement At Home

Sweet Root Village and I teamed up this Spring for a day of floral design and good food with a group of friends. SRV gave us pointers on floral design and allowed us to select a variety of blooms and let us loose! Getting to be creative in another outlet was so refreshing and of course full of joy to be alongside friends.

How to Create a Dynamic Floral Arrangement

1. Use a water-tight vessel that is deep enough to hold several inches of standing water. Carefully ball up a section of chicken wire in your hand and squeeze it into your container. Use waterproof floral tape to secure it if it's too loose. Fill your container close to the brim with clean, cool water.

2. When working with fresh flowers, remove damaged or moldy petals and blooms and strip the stems of extra foliage that might promote bacteria growth in the water. Always give the stem a fresh cut and place immediately into water to encourage a longer vase life.

3. Starting with structured and fluffy greenery will help you fill in a beginning shape and add bulk. Again, be sure to strip off any leaves that will go into the water. Following with larger feature blooms such as peonies, roses, and the like and working in some smaller filler flowers to round out the design. As a basic rule of thumb (which can often be broken!), flowers are happy in groups of three, and you'll create a lot of dimension by layering them both deeper into the arrangement as well as farther out. Extra textures, detail flowers, and fragile blooms can be layered last to finish your design!

4. As you create, be sure to take moments to step back and view your arrangement from various angles. You'll usually notice areas you maybe have neglected or a perfect space to layer in a few extra blooms to complete your shape.

5. Top off your vase with water every day or two to keep your flowers happy for as long as possible!
