Inside the Wedding Planner of Amorology’s Beautiful Home

When Skylar of Pura Soul Photography sent us this home tour of Heather and Troy Balliet's beautiful house, we could not wait to share it with you all! Heather is the owner of Amorology—a luxury event coordination and design company. Here are some words from Heather, followed by a few questions of our own!
We're known for creating personalized events that really tell the story of our couples. Our design is romantic and eclectic with a touch of playful, which is also reflective in our modern farmhouse home!
As a wedding designer, I wanted my home to be reflective of all of the things that I love, which meant incorporating pops of color and modern elements, and creating an intimate and inviting atmosphere. I wanted a house that my kids could play and have fun in!
We fell in love with it as soon as we saw the ladder and the loft, it was the selling point for us but we completely gutted the house from there! As a bunkhouse for the rancher built in the late 1800s we knew it was a diamond in the rough but had good bones and great potential and we fell for its charm and personality. It was for sure a home that we could envision raising our children in, and also had the capacity to do weddings on its expansive lawn. We purchased it a little over a year ago and quickly went to work to make it our own!
My husband, Troy, fortunately has building skills and was trained under my dad who was a general contractor and helped us to also renovate and update some of the main areas that needed some extra TLC, like the kitchen and the Master bath. We gave the house a clean coat of white on both the exterior and interior to allow the accent colors to really pop agains the background. We brought in warm colorful rugs to liven the original cherrywood floors that Troy whitewashed. We transformed what was a curved staircase into a more linear staircase with an indigo runner and a rod-iron & oak handrail that Troy welded and created in the backyard. One of my favorite features in the house is our old vintage bathtub that we had re-enameled—it used to be the bathtub that my grandpa bathed in as a baby and we love that it's found a place in our home now!
Cottage Hill: As a wedding designer, so much of your job is about creating an unforgettable experience for one day. When approaching the design of your home for everyday living, what sort of design processes or ideas from your wedding work influenced your choices for your everyday 'experiences' with your family?
Heather Balliet: Similar to our design work in weddings we start with the basics and a color palette and then build and layer upon things from there. It's always fun to start with the solid pieces like your couches for example and then build upon there with accents like your pillows and wall colors that can be switched up! When approaching our home's design, I tended to gravitate towards one specific piece or concept which is similar to how we design weddings. That concept or piece then set the whole tone of the rooms for us. Once we find that one piece whether it be; art or a pillow or a rug we then start to put the room together!
Your home is beautiful, but also warm and very family-friendly. Could you elaborate on your design process with your children's rooms? What advice do you have for creating beautiful spaces for children that reflects what they love well—avoiding clutter, but also, not 'over-designing' the space?
We always want to keep our kid's rooms playful and a place that they will love going too! We love keeping things clean while allowing them places to put each of their belongings and toys. To allow for a quick clean up we use baskets under their beds and in their cupboards . Somehow we have found a way to keep these baskets their height so they are easily accessible yet still always encouraging playtime!
For our oldest son, we used a trunk at the end of his bed to double as a bench and a fun storage space. When designing the kids rooms, we love finding some of their favorite items to put on display, and then adding pops of color! We also love finding a bedding that is simple in design and simple to make as it teaches the kids to always make their beds in the morning! The kids' Great Grandma embroidered pictures in the girl's room that hang over their bed. This served as the inspiration for the palette in the girl's room. A fun piece of art can usually serve as inspiration for me!! Our kid's rooms are some of my favorite spaces to design!
As an event designer, you work so much with trends and translating them into timeless designs for your clients. How do you apply that to your living space?
Similar to the way that we design for our weddings where things are highly personalized, we also have applied a similar method to our design at home. We brought in pieces that are meaningful and speak to us both as a couple and as a family. For example, we have silhouettes of each of our children that were handcrafted by my mother. We have them hanging on our wall in the family room.
Another of those personal items is a bullhead which we gathered from our time spent in Texas. I always try to start with the bones of the house, and start my design process with the staples such as clean marble countertops and brass hardware like we have in our kitchen and then continue to layer and build upon that with pieces that add pops of color and interest. I love staples that are classic and timeless! Being able to add accents to those allow us to play around with design in the changing times.
We have put a lot of sweat equity into our home! By that I mean, we love to get our hands dirty and create the projects we want to see! Our floors are the outcome of exactly that! We ended up whitewashing our floors from Cherry stained wood to a whitewash. My husband Troy also made the rod iron handrail and installed the floor runners to add more color and pattern for a fun yet timeless twist! Our home is one of our favorite spaces!
