Patrice and Michael's Sweet OKC Nuptials

Patrice and Michael’s Sweet okc Nuptials

Patrice and Michael were wed at the Ed Lycan Conservatory at Will Rogers Gardens in Oklahoma City. Read on to hear about their wedding day in their own words, and try not to get as teary as we did looking through their sweet wedding gallery.

How long have you known each other? How did you meet?: We've been together for 5.5 years and we met on OkCupid in OKC in 2016. Our first date was at the Friday night Art Walk on the Paseo in OKC. We had dinner at Picasso Cafe that night.

When did each of you know you wanted to get married? When did you fall for each other We moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, so that Patrice could start residency and everything kind of blossomed from there and we realized that we wanted to get married. I think we really fell hard for each other around our sixth month anniversary where we recreated our first date at the Art Walk and Michael gave me a half dozen roses - one for each month we'd been together.

Tell us about your engagement story.: Michael did so good! He picked a restaurant that we loved in Shreveport and commissioned a sketched portrait from a comic book artist as well as a note from a comic writer that we both admire. The artist and writer had collaborated on a comic together, which was the first gift Michael ever gave me. Then he had the owner of the restaurant bring out the portrait at the end of our meal and got down on one knee!

Tell us about the top 1-3 moments of your wedding day.

1. Our first look at Bradford House Hotel. It was so sweet to finally see each other all dressed up!
2. Exchanging our vows at Will Rogers Gardens. The weather was perfect, and our vows were so meaningful!
3. Our first dance. We danced to 'I must be in a good place now' by Bobby Charles.

Did you have to overcome differences in your relationship? What were they and how did you/do you battle them together? We've had to overcome a few differences in our time together. We've had to grow and adjust as an interracial couple. Also, we were in a long distance relationship for a year, which was tough. Plus, Patrice is a physician and we've had to work to make time for each other given her long work hours. We went to couples counseling about two years into our relationship which was really helped us with our communication skills. I think we try to be as open and honest as we can with each other and maintain a sense of humor.

What details in your wedding did you incorporate that were meaningful to the two of you? We tried to use vendors who shared our values and produced awesome work. We served donuts for dessert from our favorite OKC donut shop, Holey Rollers, and our flowers were designed by The Wild Mother, who had previously crafted a bouquet for us when we came up to OKC to look at wedding venues. Our menu from Chef Curry was Caribbean-inspired to pay tribute to Patrice's Guyanese and Jamaican roots.

Did you incorporate anything nontraditional or quirky? Our wedding favor was a comic about our first date illustrated by our friend, Andrew Cohen. Our wedding invitations were designed by our good friend, NatalieAnn Rich. Patrice walked down the aisle to a Prince song, 'Adore', and we walked back up the aisle to 'Now that we've found love' by Heavy D & the Boyz.
