A Photographer's Guide for First-Timers in New York City
A Photographer’s Guide to New York City

New York City : an urban mecca for architecture, fashion, art, and food beckoning to be photographed. You’re not much for tourist traps, so Time’s Square and The Statue of Liberty are out of the question for your first trip to NYC. Not to worry, whether you’re seeking skyline views, or street-style fashion snapshots, these five neighborhoods have an array of photographic opportunities for first-time visitors sans touristy vibes.
SOHO
With its iconic cast-iron facades and exposed fire escapes, this neighborhood radiates a likeness to Europe. The architecture coupled with the abundance of high-end shopping draws style mavens to the fashionable neighborhood. My two favorite aspects? The cobblestone streets and Balthazar, the famed and perpetually-trendy French Brasserie. Tip : be sure to head over to Balthazar early in the day to avoid a long wait.
MIDTOWN
A visit to classic Midtown is a must. First, wander around New York Public Library. This architectural beauty is the epitome of magnificent New York City architecture. From marble arches to the picturesque interior rooms, this should sit atop your itinerary. One must see the city skyline from the quintessential Top of the Rock. The observatory is the preferred spot for sunset and that famed city view. Tip : be sure to book your ticket for the Top of the Rock prior to your arrival.
DUMBO
Take the metro to York Street and stop at the Brooklyn Flea Market before heading to Main Street Park— the best spot to shoot both Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. Be sure to pause by the Archway Under the Bridge for the iconic shot of the Manhattan Bridge and skyline in the distance. Afterward, wander to one of Brooklyn Roasting Company’s locations nearby or spend the afternoon perusing one of the many boutiques in the area. The cobblestone streets and converted warehouses make for an urban paradise idyllic for photographs.
UPPER EAST SIDE
For a change of pace and an escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, I like to take a stroll through Central Park. With ponds, hills, forests, and walking/biking paths intertwining, the scenery is a welcomed calm. Once you’ve explored spots like the Mall and Literary Walk, Bow Bridge, and The Ramble, head east to 5th Avenue. Spanning from 80th to 84th street is the Metropolitan Museum of Art, another must-see. Take in this architectural masterpiece with spaces encompassing styles from Beaux-Arts--The Fifth Avenue Facade--to contemporary--The Sackler Wing. Then, make your way through one of the most prestigious art collections in the world. After you’ve wrapped up your visit, head to the rooftop bar for happy hour followed by small plates and wine on UVA NYC’s patio.
THE WEST VILLAGE
Finally, do not skip out on the quaint neighborhood lined with federal-style townhomes and littered with history : The West Village. Begin at the cozy and light-filled Buvette for a European inspired breakfast. Afterward, wander the quiet and photo-worthy streets--and pop in a few of the shops and bookstores-- until you need a coffee break. For this, head to the Marlton Hotel. Finish your day with dinner at One if by Land Two if by Sea and drinks at Little Branch--a dimly lit and intimate speakeasy.
Follow this guide, and you will have beautiful photographs and memories of your first trip to New York City.
