Eloping in New York City in 2020

Where to go in NYC for a romantic date, engagement, or even elopement in 2020.

Today’s love story makes up a two-part post. The visual love story of Claudia & Alex coupled with a guide to the five best spots for a romantic date, engagement, or even an elopement during 2020.

From Photographer Taylor & Porter:

This New York City session for Claudia & Alex captured the free spirit of our modern couple as they taxi and explore the city, crazy in love, riding the subway and soaking up all the energy that this dynamic place holds. Later we find them in their apartment where this intimate part of the day was captured with intentional double exposures, overlaying poetry written by her, on images of them at their very closest. The look was one of lovers thrilled to be soaking up all that life has to offer, enjoying every moment and living their lives as dynamically as the city they chose to be in. Stylist Lacy Geary and Florist Rebekah Clarke Moody created a monochromatic look that was elegant yet free-spirited and contemporary. I carefully used black and white film to achieve timelessness and a mood that perfectly suited the city scene, selecting the colours when used, with utmost care. With designs by A La Robe, carried by New York bridal boutique Spina Bride and relaxed hair and makeup by East Village-based Sharon Becker

Five Places to go on a Date, Propose, or Elope in New York City

by Greta McGee

(NOTE : the guide is intended for our readers local to NYC, not as a call to travel to NYC during the pandemic. Please use safety precautions when out. i.e. mask-wearing, hand-washing, and social distancing.)

For many couples, COVID-19 has interrupted what’s meant to be a celebration of love amongst family and friends. However, the inability to gather a big crowd to cheer you on at “I do” does not mean that getting to experience that magical moment in a more intimate sense isn’t possible nor any less meaningful. The following are five beautiful spots with incredible views and enough space to comfortably social distance. Perfect for those who just can’t wait any longer to get hitched and are looking for a romantic place to celebrate each other!

1. Sail Sunset

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be married at sea (well, river in this case), Sail Sunset is an excellent choice. Especially when looking to celebrate away from the New York crowd but still experience New York City. While this selection falls on the pricier side, it is perfect for a small group elopement full of beautiful views and an incomparable romantic setting. You have the option to book a private charter for two-three hours, or for an entire day. Pack a picnic, champagne for popping, bring an officiant, a photographer, and make memories that will last forever watching the sunset over the New York City skyline.

2. Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies

One of the wonders of New York (however ironic it may seem) is the ability to discover places that are so unlike New York City -- places that feel like a haven from the overproduced, congested space New Yorkers are all too familiar with. Some semblance to our industrialized past, Red Hook is one of these places.

Tucked away amongst the low-story brick buildings is Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pie. If you’re a fan of fresh-baked key lime pies and an underrated view of the NY Harbor and the Statue of Liberty, this quaint storefront is a must for any celebration you and your boo are having. Make a memorable adventure out of the trip and hop on the South Brooklyn Ferry from Wall Street’s Pier 11 to Red Hook and explore your way to a great treat.

Steve’s is currently offering window service for pies, tarts, Swingles (mini key lime pies covered in chocolate!), limonada, and coffee. Click here to check out their hours during COVID-19!

3. Kontokosta Winery

If you’re in the mood for more of a prolonged adventure, Kontokosta Winery offers a breath-taking setting for you and your love. Approximately a one to three hour drive from the city in Greenport, NY, this winery is on a stunning land that opens up to the water. With a six-person group max, this option allows for any close family to friends you may want by your side. Furthermore, out of the fee-involved locations, this is one of those most affordable ($10 per person). So take a trip to Greenport, drink wine by the waterside, make some unforgettable memories!

4. Conservatory Garden, Central Park

Stashed away on the east side of 105th Street lies the Conservatory Garden in Central Park, what may be considered an overlooked section of the park is actually full of magnificent views. This garden gives off a perfect combination of a clean-cut and wild oasis. With six gorgeous acres to explore, the Conservatory Garden is filled with stunning fountains, sculptures, an array of flowers in bloom, and a butterfly garden. If an idyllic spot resembling the gardens of Alice in Wonderland sounds like something you’d want, this is the place for you. Take a blanket and sit back or simply carouse the grounds for hours, whatever you decide will be delightful (and not to mention picture-perfect).

5. Brooklyn Botanical Garden

Officially reopened , the Brooklyn Botanical Garden is an enchanting place to get lost and be present with your loved one. With gorgeous cherry blossoms, enclosed walkways, and many  themed gardens to explore, anyone looking to get some fantastic photos to show off will  be very pleased. Hunt for the most romantic spots in the garden, like the Cranford Rose Garden. Free tickets are available, providing beautiful memories on a budget.
