Charleston Anniversary Session

Photographer Emily March sent us this sweet anniversary session. We'll let her explain why and let this special couple share some of their secrets to long-lastng love.

I love these pictures for a lot of reasons. The colors, the soft light, the beach. But what I love most about them is the people. These are my parents, and like most parents, they have been the most influential people in my life. I grew up an only child with an Air Force surgeon dad and a research scientist mom. I never inherited their scientific prowess, but I did gain their love for chocolate and travel. Despite the incredible demands of their jobs, I honestly can't remember a time when they didn't put me or each other first. Well, maybe once - I was five and threw my dad's pager across the room when he was on call one night! To say that they have loved me (and each other) well would be a massive understatement. When we moved to a new town where I didn't have any friends, they were my playmates. When soccer consumed my life in high school, they were my cheerleaders. And when I married my husband two years ago, they were my example. Their faithful and unwavering love for each other has been strengthened by seasons of hardship and has no doubt become more beautiful over the last 35 years since they met.

They celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary in June, so I decided to snap a few pictures of them on the beach during our family vacation. Without a doubt, they are some of my favorite pictures that I've ever taken, and I know I'll grow to love them, and the couple in them, even more with time.

What is the secret to a happy marriage? Don't be selfish and don't make a mountain out of a mole hill! We all have our quirks and make mistakes, so forgive your spouse quickly over stupid little things. Most people have heard that you shouldn't go to bed mad- that's a good thing to remember.

What is your favorite thing about each other? I love Larry's puppy dog eyes, but also how he pushes me beyond my comfort zone.  I wouldn't be what I am without him. I know Larry loves my eyes, too. And I am his biggest cheerleader!

What is your biggest piece of advice for newlyweds? What about new parents? Start doing #1! New parents: Share duties, and get as much sleep as you can.  Spend time together whenever it's possible. Make sure you have a date night.

What are you most looking forward to in the years ahead? We look forward to just growing old together and enjoying grandchildren (someday!). Making memories is always something to look forward to!
