Exploring the Artistic Process

Photographs by Lindsey LaRue

From Andrea, the artistic director: The inspiration started with the space itself. This is a working studio space at my alma mater, Berry College. I always pay a visit to the art building when I'm back on campus since I was a fine art major myself. This wing of the building opened up for student use after I graduated - and yes I envy these students! After stumbling upon the studio I immediately put it on my short list of shoot locations.

The most natural story to tell was the one that was most inherent to the space. We wanted to create a documentary style of shoot in which we captured an artist naturally working through her creative process. Lindsey and I talked with Christina about how she works and what inspires her paintings. The most meaningful part of the shoot was being able to talk honestly with other creative women about our struggles with the artistic process and the challenges of a creative passion as a vocation. How do we stop the comparison game? How can social media work be more of a benefit and less of a burden? And most of all, how do we satisfy the most demanding and critical customer we will ever face - ourselves?
